Theatre Malta Festival in Poznan

Every year, the Malta Festival Poznań is created by over 600 artists from Poland and many other countries, who for 2 weeks, stage over 300 events at some 30 locations across Poznań. The festival presents both internationally acclaimed artists and emerging young talent, in addition to initiating and co-creating some unique projects in the field of theatre, dance, music and visual art, as well as a variety of artistic community projects.

The festival was established in 1991. The character of the festival, its energy and programme coincided with socio-political transformations that took place in Poland after the year 1989. Malta has its roots in change, building social relations from scratch, democracy and opening to the world. After several years of developing, by including different disciplines in its programme, and the merging of high and popular culture at its best, the Malta has become the city’s flagship cultural event, and also one of the major performing arts festivals in Poland and Central Europe, awarded the EFFE Award 2015-2016 as one of twelve the most innovative festivals on our continent.

Malta Generator is a section which invites people to participate in common activities, to be together and pose questions about the surrounding reality by taking part in art projects, entertainment and public debate. It’s also the festival village set in the very heart of the city, at Freedom Square, providing art, activity and entertainment day and night every day of the festival.

This year, Malta Festival Poznań is determined by the dynamics of a leap. With the theme of this edition, the Leap of Faith Idiom, we are considering the possible variations on approaches to faith: a risky leap into admiration and beauty, but also into fanaticism. We ask how different beliefs and axiologies can come together in a discussion. Where do the dividing lines run, as well as the ones of understanding?

After five years, Poznań will be revisited by the legendary Needcompany from Belgium. Grace Ellen Barkey, Jan Lauwers and Maarten Seghers will meet with the festival audience in a new role – as the curators of the Leap of Faith Idiom.

And for the Malta finale a song will resound in the open space of Wieniawski Park with everyone invited to sing along to the music of Zygmunt Konieczny in the exciting interpretation of Agata Zubel, arranged by Cezary Duchnowski.
